The Orkney Experience – Optical Illusion attraction
Just a short walk from the bus station, Tourist Information Centre and the main street, The Orkney Experience optical illusion attraction is one of the latest visitor venues in Orkney. Come and dress like a viking, ‘visit’ a Sanday beach, or be caught by Cubbie Roo the giant – there’s lots to do.
Within Orkney Life, Orkney Landscape and Orkney Legend, visitors can put themselves ‘in the picture’ with the optical illusions while being photographed by friends and family, or taking a ‘selfie.’ With costumes and other artefacts, we invite everyone to handle, wear, and try out what’s on show. Some of the exhibits are antique, so please handle with care, but please handle.
Orkney has a rich history and a wealth of activities and local customs which only take place on certain days of the year, with beautiful landscapes. We show these in a way where each visitor can be part of the illusion in the activities, landscape or customs, and with fairies, trolls, giants, and sea monsters in Orkney folklore, the Orkney Legend area provides a truly ‘fantastic’ view of tales told round the peat fires of old.
The venue is indoors, and visitors are welcome to wander at leisure, where the photo opportunities are self-explanatory or have a graphic demonstration of how best to take each optical illusion photograph – making the whole venue available to everyone, no matter what your language. Translations and explanations of some of the larger exhibits will be provided, and each season will bring changing exhibits and interactivity.
A limited selection of locally produced merchandise is available, including the award winning Orkney Ice Cream. There is also a coffee and hot drinks machine with outdoor seating area.
Wheelchair accessible and family friendly throughout, with discounts applicable for groups of 5 or more. Family ticket, and season tickets available at very affordable prices.
Don’t just visit Orkney, Experience it!
